What the clinic evaluates

Voice disorders. Hoarseness, voice fatigue, vocal nodules and polyps, vocal cord paralysis, muscle tension dysphonia, and voice problems in teachers, singers and other people who use their voice at work. [Voice Disorders page]

Swallowing disorders. Coughing or choking while eating, food sticking in the throat, recurrent chest infections, and swallowing problems after stroke or surgery. Evaluation includes FEES, an endoscopic swallowing study. [Swallowing Disorders page]

Airway disorders. Noisy breathing (stridor), narrowing of the voice box or windpipe, vocal cord immobility affecting breathing, and care for people with a tracheostomy. [Airway Disorders page]

Examination facilities

• Videolaryngoscopy and flexible laryngoscopy to examine the voice box and throat.
• Stroboscopy, which shows vocal fold vibration in slow motion.
• FEES (flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) to observe swallowing and detect aspiration.
• Voice and swallowing therapy with speech-language pathologists.
• Trans nasal Esophagoscopy(TNE) an unique way to endoscopy the esophagus (food pipe) through a smaller than normal endocope.
• Acoustic voice analysis to objectively evaluate your voice as to compare it post treatment.
• Nasal endoscopy and other equipment for general ENT examination

What to expect on your visit

1. History. Your symptoms, how long they have been present, your work and voice use, medical history and medicines.
2. Examination. Ear, nose and throat examination, then endoscopic examination of the voice box when needed.
3. Further tests. Stroboscopy, FEES or imaging only if your problem needs them.
4. Plan. The findings and options are explained, which may include voice or swallowing therapy, medication, or a procedure. Treatment depends on the diagnosis.

When to see a laryngologist

• Hoarseness or a voice change lasting more than two weeks
• Voice fatigue or loss of range when speaking or singing
• Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
• Persistent throat clearing or a feeling of something stuck in the throat
• Noisy or difficult breathing

Emergency: difficulty breathing, blue lips, or being unable to swallow saliva needs emergency care. Go to the nearest emergency department.
